Responsibilities

The Pokagon Band Police Department will assist agencies in Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren counties as well as agencies in Indiana and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Tribal law enforcement is the only law enforcement service directly accountable to the citizenry. Captain VanCompernolle believes tribal policing is unique in that an officer must be knowledgeable in state, federal, and tribal law. It is crucial to have qualified tribal officers whose primary function is to protect citizens, assets, and lands.

A tribal officer can expect to be involved in everything from conservation and gaming law, to violent crime responses, and investigations. Our Police Department consists of highly educated trained men and women who put their lives on the line every day to protect the membership as well as the surrounding community.
