Transitional Housing Assistance Program

The purpose of the Transitional Housing Assistance Program ("THAP") is to provide a blend of budget and credit counseling, referrals to other service providers along with temporary housing subsidies to assist qualified Participants in improving social and economic status in order to regain independence, self-sufficiency, and return to more traditional housing.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

1.Be a citizen or non-citizen who:

  • Is at least Eighteen (18) years of age or emancipated by operation of law or court with the legal capacity to contract.
  • Has custody of a Pokagon minor child.
  • Is actively working towards reunification with Pokagon Minor child.

2.Must be experiencing a housing crisis, such as being homeless or living in a shelter or substandard housing

3.Must be within the 10-county Service Area

4.Must meet Low Income Guidelines

5.Is not in debt to the Tribe

6. Participant shall not own or reside at any other home: rather the unit to which the subsidy applies.

Types of Eligible Housing:

  • Conventional Home          - Manufactured or Mobile Home
  • Multi-Unit                                 - Independent group residence
  • Apartment                               - Dormitory
  • Townhome                               - Certified Boarding House
  • Hotel/Motel

Assistance:

-No more than 30 days shall be between hotel stay and monthly rental subsidy portion of the program. 
-No more than $165 will be paid to hotel/motel per night with the maximum of 14 days on the participants' behalf.  
-No more than up to $5000.00 for hotel/motel stay and move-in costs combined, and then up to $5000.00 for up to 12 months whichever comes first.  
-This program may only be used once in a lifetime no matter how much of each program portion was used.
