A Kayak-Based Longitudinal Environmental Condition Inventory of the Dowagiac River in Southwest Michigan

image005

Utilizing a Bureau of Indian Affairs Great Lakes Restoration Initiative grant the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi examined the Dowagiac River in Southwest Michigan along its entire length. Through multiple river section surveys data was collected with the use of multiprobes, goPro cameras, kayaks, depth profiling, and water sampling. The data create a picture of the condition of the Dowagiac River that can be utilized by watershed partners to help protect the Dowagiac River, select areas of concern for future projects, and areas where the river is most healthy.  The data can help recreational enthusiasts with their pursuits and can help watershed groups as they develop concepts to pursue in the future. Click the bolded links below to learn more about the project.

Explore the ArcGIS StoryMap of the Dowagiac River Environmental Condition Inventory, take a virtual kayak tour along the entire river, review the data collected, check out your favorite spot, find areas to target invasive species, or select where your next river cleanup should occur, the possibilities of exploring are almost endless.
